1970 - Okinawa - Suicide Cliffs

This picure was taken at Suicide Cliffs, southern Okinawa. The cliffs in the area had many caves and tunnels that Japanese solders occupied during World War II. When the Japanese realized that the Americans had won the battle for Okinawa, many left the caves and jumped over the cliffs rather than being taken prisoner.

1984 - Korea - UNIVAC Penny Counter Computer Console

This picture is of a UNIVAC 1050-II Penny Counter console, a mobile version of the UNIVAC 1050-II computer . The entire system was contained in 3 18-ft trailers that were placed side by side, with doors on the sides that allowed access to each trailer without going outside. The middle unit contained the operators console, card reader, card punch, printer, and tape drives. The unti on one side housed the CPU and disk drives, the other had several KSR-35 remote terminals and storage for paper and punch cards. It was located at Kunsan AB, South Korea, and was used as a secondary system for reports processing, or as the primary computer system when the non-mobile system at Kunsan was down due to hardware problems.
